The podcast I chose was ‘The Caliphate’ which was produced by The New York Times. I listened to Chapter 1&2. Actually I was a bit confused when I listened to it for the first time because there were more than three different sounds that appeared in the audio series. But when I found out the roles for each of them, I found it was a very interesting and vivid podcast. The variety of sounds from different people including the reporters and others interviewees can grab the attention of listeners. Besides, the background music is like a prelude of a title song in a horror movie, which is very appealing. For example, in Chapter 1, Rukmini Callimachi told us the reality of being on the terrorism beat, where we can fully feel about the horrible atmosphere with the background music. The music is interspersed throughout the whole podcast and not just put at the beginning and the end, which makes the audio not that dry and boring. Although the topic of this podcast is about ISIS, the cooperation between the reporter Rukmini Callimachi and Andy mills makes the podcast not that serious. They sometimes make jokes and their conversation can be interrupted by an anonymous passenger. The natural sounds also make the audio more vivid and picture-like. In addition, the title of each episode is brief and attractive. I had a high desire to read the rest of the audio series whenever I finished an episode. Overall, I think this is a very successful, attractive and interesting podcast.
